Shine
“…Shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life…”As Paul so eloquently states in chapter 2 of Philippians, our light certainly illuminates our Christian paths and is not hard for all to see. Many Christians, however, attempt to show that illumination by turning on and off a switch. From past experiences, we know that does not work. Living life while straddling a line simply makes us lukewarm and ineffective.
But Paul has an answer to this mindset!
-- In Christ, we do the work of the gospel
-- In Christ, we are united in all things- Like-minded, of one spirit and purpose
Many devoted Christians get a little confused about shining like stars. You see, stars shine of the own accord! In other words, they produce their own light. Often times, Christians feel as though they need to create the light! Although Paul writes of shining like stars, he certainly does not imply it is the result of a person's own doing. Notice what precedes the “shining” segment in the chapter – the humility of Jesus.
- Subservient to His Father
- No concern of reputation
- Genuine, loving service to others
The band, Salvador, sings a song titled Shine that so clearly states this premise. Click on the band's name to hear the entire song, but the chorus goes like this:
Lord let me shine, shine like the moon
A reflection of you in all that I do
Lord let me be a light for your truth
Light of the world,
I wanna be used to shine for you
The moon is a rock – it does not shine. It simply reflects the light of the sun.
Let us go forth and reflect the light of the Son as we grow in Christ enjoined in the work of the gospel spreading the message of love and generosity.
